Our Ngā Mātārae tima are looking for a Mātanga - Tikanga me Te Reo Māori (Te Reo Lead). Reporting to the Tumuaki Huanga Māori, you will lead and drive a strategic approach for te reo Māori; Your advice will be considerate of and informed by your relationship with mana whenua iwi and mataawaka entities.
Working at the highest level, you will engage with elected members, the executive team, and provide tikanga support and care for staff in Māori tikanga roles, developing the profile and understanding of te reo and tikanga Māori in council at a strategic level.
Your mahi will be to:
- Lead and drive the development and implementation of council’s te reo Māori strategic direction in conjunction with Ngā Mātārae, Māori outcome leads and the wider staff network across the council
- Provide expert support and advice to the organisation on best practice tikanga and provide te reo Māori strategic leadership for council
- Support the Maori outcomes wider leadership team across the council and the development of Kia Ora Tāmaki Makaurau, specifically the Kia Ora Te Reo outcome
- Ensure the work of Ngā Mātārae is appropriately led by te reo and tikanga Māori, including providing iwi and mataawaka relationship support.
- Develop and support council staff with a role in providing tikanga for the organisation.
You will also work with the Māori Outcome Lead – Group Services to establish programmes that recognise and upskill staff in the business to be able to provide tikanga and te reo support for their timas.

He kōrero mōu: About you
We are looking for people with strong lived experience in the use and delivery of te reo me ona tikanga and in working with mana whenua and mataawaka. Translation certification is an advantage.
You will have a good understanding and appreciation of the workings and function of local government and an ability to work with and support elected members.
You will need specific experience with:
- Developing and leading te reo strategic direction
- Developing and leading strategic direction across a large and complex organization
- Proven to influence and communicate with a wide cross-section of people
- Providing pastoral care

Salary range $114,000 - $125,000 (dependent on experience)
